An error code on a water softener display means the valve controller has detected a fault it cannot resolve on its own, such as a stalled motor or a missed regeneration. Codes differ by brand and model, so your manual has the exact list. This guide uses one common valve as an example and explains what to check for each type of message.

The Fleck 7000 SE service manual lists three codes: Err 0 for a stalled drive motor, Err 1 for a drive motor that is running continuously, and Err 2 when more than 99 days have passed since the last regeneration. Other valves use different codes, so confirm against your own manual before acting.

What Does an Error Code Mean on a Water Softener?

The code is the controller’s way of reporting what it can see: the valve cannot move, the valve will not stop, or a cycle has not started when it should have. The Fleck example above falls into exactly those three groups.

The message tells you which part of the system to look at. It does not tell you the cause, which is why the next step depends on the code and on what you can observe at the valve.

What Do Err 0, Err 1 and Err 2 Mean?

Each of the three codes in the Fleck manual points to a different problem. The table pairs each one with a first check and the page that covers the fix.

Code Meaning (Fleck 7000 SE) First check Where to go next
Err 0 Drive motor is stalled Confirm the unit has power and note whether the motor responds at all See control valve problems
Err 1 Drive motor is running continuously Check whether water is running to the drain nonstop; if so, put the unit on bypass See the stuck backwash section of the control valve guide
Err 2 More than 99 days since the last regeneration Check the regeneration mode, schedule and clock See why a softener isn’t regenerating

What Should You Check Before Calling for Service?

A few checks take minutes and tell a technician what to expect. They also separate a power or programming issue from a fault inside the valve.

  • Write down the exact code and the model name from the valve label.
  • Check power at the outlet and plug, and think back to any recent outage. A power interruption can reset the clock and schedule.
  • Look at the drain line. Continuous flow alongside an error points to a stuck cycle. Putting the unit on bypass stops the waste and restores household water; if the bypass will not move, see our guide to a stuck bypass valve.
  • Look up the code in your manual for the exact meaning and any reset steps for your model.

When Does an Error Code Need Service?

A code that returns after these checks, or a valve that does not move, needs inspection. The cause is then inside the valve, such as the motor, the drive or the controller, and guessing at parts gets expensive quickly.

Not every softener complaint shows up as a code on the display. If regeneration completes without any error but the water tastes different afterward, that’s worth checking against how much sodium a salt-based softener actually adds. And a newly installed unit that throws no codes but still leaves water hard usually comes down to a setup issue rather than a fault the controller would flag.

Common Questions About Water Softener Error Codes

These are the questions homeowners ask most often when a code appears.

Can you clear a water softener error code yourself?

Some codes can be cleared by following the reset steps in your manual. A code that comes back means the cause is still there, so check the manual before resetting.

Are error codes the same on every water softener?

No. Codes and meanings differ by brand and model. The Fleck 7000 SE example here covers one valve family.

Is a water softener error code an emergency?

Usually not. A code showing the motor running continuously can waste water until it is addressed, so putting the unit on bypass is a safe interim step. Other codes can wait for service.
